What is a Cochlear Implant?
A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that improves the sense of hearing in people who are profoundly deaf or have severe hearing difficulties. The implant consists of an external part that is located behind the ear and a second part that is surgically placed under the skin.
An implant does not restore normal hearing. However, it can provide a deaf person with a useful understanding of the sounds of the environment and improve their communication with the people around them.

When do you need a cochlear implant?
A cochlear implant is needed in cases of severe hearing loss, damage to the cochlea, bilateral and sensorineural hearing loss.
Severe to profound hearing loss in patients with sensorineural (inner ear-related) hearing loss where impairment can’t be treated with standard hearing aids. Children and adults with severe hearing difficulties are candidates for cochlear implants. Cochlear implants are successfully used all over the world by both pre-lingual and post-lingual children and adults.
How does a cochlear implant work?
A cochlear implant has two parts, an external sound processor and an internal implant. The external sound processor captures the sounds, filters and processes it, and transmits this digital signal to the internal implant. The internal implant sends electrical signals to tiny electrodes that are placed in the cochlea. These signals directly stimulate hearing thereby making it possible to hear even in case of damaged inner ear.

Cochlear implants have the following benefits
- Improved ability to hear and understand words without lip reading
- Increased access to environmental sounds
- Ability to be able to hear in a noisy environment
An audiologist and an ENT specialist can determine if a person needs Cochlear Implants after conducting some tests. The screening tests include audiometer and tuning fork test, and CT or MRI scan of the internal ear. Speech assessment is performed to understand the level of hearing loss. In case of children, a paediatrician may be consulted in this stage.
With a relatively minor two-hour surgery performed under general anaesthesia, most patients experience a tremendous positive impact on their quality of life. It takes about 3 to 6 weeks to heal completely, though the patient is discharged on the same day. The patient will have a follow up appointment in a week so that the ENT surgeon can check if the cut has healed completely. The implant is activated once the healing is complete.
Post surgery, the implant needs to be activated and programmed or mapped. This process is carried out 3-4 weeks after surgery is performed and enough time is given for healing. The mapping is part of the post-operative rehabilitation stage where the implant is fine tuned and the patient is trained to get accustomed to the cochlear implant.
The cost of cochlear implants depends on the type of implant, along with other pre and post surgery costs. Book an appointment with us to get a customized quote.
